Tips for Downsizing or Rightsizing
By Risa Meyer
As life changes, so does our use of space. For every milestone in our life, we use space differently. Whether you’re welcoming a new child, or proudly in the empty nest phase you may have decided the space you are in is no longer right for your needs. Preparing for a new right-sized space can be an overwhelming prospect. Planning for your move can help you manage the process over time.
In preparation for a downsize or rightsize here are a few items to check off your list:
Set a date for your move.
Interview and hire a Realtor.
Begin to Sort and Declutter small amounts daily as early as 5-6 months before your move.
Plan for your new space by learning the dimensions and deciding what items you will have room for.
Create a floor plan or template for your new abode.
Consult an accountant or tax expert on what financial records should be retained.
Consult or consider hiring a move manager, relocation specialist or organizer like Caring Transitions
Collect and gather important documentation like birth certificates, deeds, medical records, etc.
Hire Estate Sale or Online Auction professionals.
Contact friends and loved ones about any items they have stored in your extra space.
Designate items to gift.
Ship Items to Family and Friends.
Begin discarding items that will not be donated, gifted or sold.
Gather estimates from movers at least 3 months before your move.
Obtain a storage unit to slowly transfer items you want to keep, yet don’t intend to donate or sell.
Decide which items may need to be appraised.
Gather quotes from and hire an appraiser.
Decide which items will be donated and schedule pick up/drop-off.
Schedule utility transfers, connections, and disconnections.
